Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized, to varying degrees, by the presence of chronic abdominal pain and alterations in bowel habits in the absence of organic disease. The pathophysiology of IBS has not been fully elucidated yet, but it appears to arise from the complex interaction of lifestyle, genetic, dietary, and environmental factors. Signs and symptoms of IBS include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and alterations in bowel movements with diarrhea, constipation, or both.
